Accelerator. Art in Public Space Concludes with 2 Artworks in the Public Space, Produced by Albert Kaan (Otopeni, November 13, 2024) and Mihai Savin (Iași, November 15, 2024).

November 11, 2024

The artist Albert Kaan will present the artwork, “The Vessel”, in a performance that will take place on November 13, 2024, between 17:00-18:00, at Lidl Otopeni, Calea Bucureștilor 52, Otopeni 075100.

Two days later, artist Mihai Savin will conclude the project’s series of artworks in public space with a performance of his work “Obrăznicia Pământului”. The performance will take place in Iași, on 2 routes:

  • Route 1: 13:30 (CUG), Valea Adâncă Street – Prof. Nicolae Bucur Street – Ștefan Dimitrescu Street;
  • Route 2: 15:30 (BUCIUM), Constantin Pop Street – Grigore T. Popa Street.

Mihai Savin: “The performance proposes an ethical questioning of social priorities, using a concrete reproduction of the artwork Cumințenia Pământului as an allegorical drive for the following question: is it moral to fund higher-level needs when the fundamental ones remain unmet? The installation of the cogwheels serves both allegorical (through performative production) and conceptual (object-related) purposes, considering the nomadic condition and commodity status of modern art (as evidenced by the proprietary history of the reproduced work). Rolling the artwork on the unpaved streets of Iași becomes a performative gesture that tackles on the distribution of public resources in a society with unsatisfied fundamental needs.”

Albert Kaan: “The Vessel is part of my ongoing series, Liminal Spaces, which explores the concept of existing between worlds. During my urban and natural explorations, I carry LED shapes and silhouettes, seeking locations where I can spontaneously create ephemeral narratives.

This work focuses on the idea of a machine as a vessel for traversing new realities. The abandoned building becomes a temporary stage, a skeletal ship occupied by new characters and narratives. By briefly inhabiting this space, I aim to transform the building into a platform for imaginative exploration, introducing new personalities and backstories.”

Albert Kaan, Roxana Morar, Dumitrița Răzlog, Ioana Rusu and Mihai Savin are the 5 emerging artists selected in April to participate in Accelerator. Mentoring and Art in the Public Space project.

The works of art in public space produced by the artists are: “Braiding Grounds” – Roxana Morar (Baia Mare), “Digging for an Indefinite Future” – Dumitrița Răzlog (Năvodari), “What Fits in a Suitcase” – Ioana Rusu (Iași), “The Vessel” – Albert Kaan (Otopeni) and “Obrăznicia Pământului”- Mihai Savin (Iași).

The current edition of Accelerator was dedicated entirely to art in public spaces. Before the presentation stage, which is due soon and which marks the end of it, the artists completed a complex mentoring session that covered topics customised to this practice.
